Surfing in India
India has over 7,500 km of coastline, making it a hidden gem for surfing in Asia. While many people were once unsure about the ocean due to myths or lack of awareness, surfing in India has grown rapidly over the last few years.
One of the key things to understand is the difference between the West Coast and East Coast surf seasons. Both offer great waves — just at different times of the year.
On the West Coast (facing the Arabian Sea), the surf season runs from September to May.
For surfers, the best conditions arrive from late September through November, with clean swell and good wave shape.
From October to May, the waves stay consistent, soft, and ideal for beginner surf lessons — especially in places like Goa.
The East Coast (facing the Bay of Bengal) has its surf season from March to August, driven by the southwest monsoon. This coast gets heavier swell and more point breaks, often better suited for experienced surfers during peak months.
India is still growing as a surf destination — with warm water, uncrowded beaches, and year-round options depending on where you go. Whether you're learning to surf or chasing bigger swell, there's always a coast waiting.
